Parliament to summon security heads

Lawmakers “question” Daesh’s claims of having been behind Monday’s deadly suicide bombing.

The Wolesi Jirga, Lower House of Parliament, will summon the security ministers to answer questions over the recent suicide bombings in Kabul which claimed the lives of dozens of people, lawmakers said on Wednesday.

This comes after Daesh claimed responsibility for a double explosion on Monday that killed 29 people, including nine journalists. Ten days ago, 60 people were killed in an explosion at a population registration center in Kabul.

Some MPs said on Wednesday the recent attacks were “cowardly” and that security organizations are “unable” to ensure the people’s safety. They also said Daesh’s claims of responsibility of such attacks was “questionable”.

“On behalf of the Wolesi Jirga, we condemn these acts and we share this grief, but government’s shortcomings are seriously felt,” said Abdul Rauf Ibrahimi, the Wolesi Jirga Speaker.

“This attack was on the voice of the people. And it is a big oppression,” said Wazhma Safi, an MP.

Other MPs said Monday’s attack on journalists was “an attack on freedom of expression”.
“The issuing of statements by Daesh is not assessed by any government organization. Where are these addresses?” asked Shahgul Rezaee, an MP.

“A government which cannot ensure people’s safety cannot be legitimate,” said Sadiqizada Nili, an MP.

Meanwhile, a number of Kabul residents also blamed lawmakers for the lack of security in the country.

“All problems will be solved if they (MPs) exercise their authorities for just one day,” said Khalilullah Shankar, a resident of Kabul.

“These problems will not exist if parliament has a proper plan and appoints eligible people for security organizations,” said Khater Pardes, another resident.
