70% Of Journalists Unhappy With Govt’s Activities Against Violence

A study conducted by Afghanistan National Journalist’s Union (ANJU) reveals that government has not investigated 70 percent of violence, murder and harassment cases against journalists and 70 percent of media persons are not happy with government’s activities to prevent the issue.

The survey was carried out in 11 provinces, interviewing 1,088 journalists and media workers.

CEO of the union, Fahim Dashti, said at a gathering in Kabul that 421 cases out of 700 cases of journalists’ murder have been investigated so far.

The survey also speaks of gender-based discrimination and states that 30 percent of women journalists and media workers said they were mistreat at workplace and out of office due to gender issues.

“Nearly 30 percent of women interviewed in the survey have said they have witnessed discrimination and harassment inside and outside office,” Dashti said.

Meanwhile, a number of journalists pointed out to security issues and said they have low access to information provided by government offices.

“We have witnessed increase in violence against journalists and the reason is a lack of ensuring the safety of media workers,” Hussain Nasiri, a journalist said.

“Journalists are faced with lack of information when they want to prepare investigative reports,” Masuma Jafari, another journalist said.

The ANJU urged government to address their problems and raise the issue at the Brussels Summit.
