Contract Signed For New Carpet Industrial Townships

Afghanistan Independent Land Authority on Monday signed a contract with the carpet weavers union which will help establish the first carpet manufacturing townships for carpet weavers.

The industrial-residential townships will be built over 3,500 acres of land in Nangarhar, Kunduz and Balkh provinces.

According to President Ashraf Ghani’s office, the establishment of the township and industrial parks will help the country attract investment.

The land authority officials have said that it has allocated nearly 9,000 acres of land for carpet townships and industrial parks across the country.

In the first phase of the program, 1,500 acres of land will be provided in Nangarhar, 1,000 acres of land in Kunduz and another 1,000 acres of land in Balkh.

“The project will be jointly implemented by the ministry of commerce, housing and the carpet weavers union, undoubtedly with the implementation of the project, the country’s carpet industry will be promoted more and more,” said Mohammad Jawad Paikar, head of Afghanistan Independent Land Authority.

“The establishment of townships and industrial parks will develop the country’s carpet industry, the ministry of housing will take the necessary steps towards implementing the plans for the construction of these townships,” said Sayed Saadat Mansour Naderi, minister of housing.

“The carpet industry is facing numerous challenges; but this is the first time in the history of the country that the government announces support for the development of the carpet industry. This will facilitate grounds for expansion of carpet in the country,” said Esmatullah Bator, head of Afghanistan carpet exporters union on Monday.

It is said that currently Afghan carpets are being sold on the international markets as Pakistani carpets, the carpet union claims. They also say they continue to face technical and investment challenges including lack of facilities for factories.

$200 million USD has been allocated for the project which will be completed in ten years. The project will provide jobs to 110,000 individuals.
