Kandahar police chief, who along with his wife, registered his name to vote, said this time the upcoming elections appear to be different to those held in the past.
Kandahar police chief General Abdul Raziq on Wednesday called on Kandahar residents in the southern province to participate in the upcoming parliamentary and district council elections.
Kandahar police chief, who along with his wife, registered his name to vote, said this time the upcoming elections appear to be different to those held in the past.
Meanwhile, a number of lawmakers in Afghanistan’s Wolesi Jirga (Lower House of Parliament) have expressed concerns over the slow voter registration turnout so far.
“The Independent Election Commission should consider a campaign program in view of the elections,” said parliament speaker Abdul Rauf Ibrahimi.
“The voter registration process is moving forward very slowly, particularly among women, whose turnout seems to be very weak,” said MP Samia Azizi.
“Our expectation from the people from all walks of life including shopkeepers, drivers and businessmen is to register their names and vote in the elections,” said Raziq.
Raziq encouraged people to register and to get their ID’s stamped by the Independent Election Commission (IEC).
However, one MP Shukria Paikan raised the issue of awareness.
“People do not have sufficient information about the process,” Paikan said.
But, the IEC officials have reiterated that the commission will soon address the issue regarding the lack of awareness campaigns.
“All advertisements are being carried out by the UNDP project, it has not been much in our control,” said IEC commissioner Maliha Hassan.
