54 militants lay down arms, join peace process

54 Taliban militants including four of their commanders have laid down arms and joined peace process in eastern Nangarhar province of Afghanistan.

“These individuals were involved in terror activities. After they discovered the facts with the efforts of the Afghan intelligence agency, they joined peace process,” said Ataullah Khogyani, provincial governor spokesman.

According to Khogyani, the group has handed over around 54 light and heavy weapons as well.

These individuals were involved in anti-government activities in Bati-Kot, Achin, Rodat, Momand Dara and Khogyani districts, the official added.

Local officials: Police in Badghis selling military equipment to militants

Local officials in Badghis say some Afghan police soldiers are selling their weapons and other military equipment to anti-government armed groups in the province.

Confirming the issue, Gen. Ahmad Fahim Qayem, the newly appointed provincial police chief said that every police soldier who commits such act of “betrayal” will be prosecuted.
“Don’t show mercy on those who are killing you. Fire 10 bullets against their one bullet,” Gen. Qayem said. “Don’t sell police army’s bullets. Every soldier who does that should know that in fact he sells himself and his family.”

The militant groups – engaged in fight against the security forces – are said to be using the weapons and ammunition of the pro-government forces.

ISIS and Taliban suffer casualties in Nangarhar air and ground operations

At least six militants belonging to the Taliban group and ISIS were killed during separate operations conducted in eastern Nangarhar province of Afghanistan.

The Ministry of Defense (MoD) said Saturday a least three Taliban insurgents were killed during the Afghan army operations in Ghani Khel and Mohmand Dara districts.

A statement by MoD said at least one insurgent was also detained and one of their vehicles, a motorcycle, and some weapons and ammunition were also destroyed.

In another statement, the Ministry of Defense said at least three ISIS militants were killed after their hideout was targeted in an airstrike in Achin district.

Bomb goes off in crowded city market in Mazar-i-Sharif

A bomb in a crowded in market in the north Afghanistan city of Mazar-i-Sharif on Tuesday killed at least two people and wounded 15, police officials said.

Mazar-i-Sharif, an important commercial centre near the border with Uzbekistan, has generally been spared the violence unleashed by insurgent groups battling the NATO-backed government in Kabul.

The attack on Tuesday was carried out by a suicide bomber, said police commander Baba Jan.
